Records fall at the Region 2 Championships

7/11/16

CHESTER, Pa. – Round 2 of the Junior Olympic Championship progessional series was held July 7-10 at Widener University.  1239 athletes participated in the competition as the Three Rivers Association was joined by the Mid-Atlantic, New Jersey, and Niagara Associations. TRA sent at total of 235 athletes from 17 teams (10 unattached).

Athletes had much stiffer competition and the advancement window narrowed as only the top 5 athletes qualified for the National Championships scheduled for July 25th – 31st in Sacramento, CA.  In combined events the top 2 athletes earned the trip to Sacramento. Once again, TRA athletes performed very well taking home almost three dozen Regional Championship crowns. Isaiah Melvin of Valley Speedsters led the way with a record setting performance in the 13-14 boys Pentathlon. His total score was 2958 and surpassed the previous Region 2 record by 19 points set the year prior. Isaiah participated in several other events and won the high jump in 1.80m setting a new TRA record.

Isaiah’s teammate, Corinn Brewer, also had a great Region 2 competition. She placed 1st in the 11-13 girls 1500m with a time of 5:16.28 which set a new TRA record. She earned an additional Region 2 crown in the 3000m. 8 & under girl, Taylor Neese of Wings of Moon, placed 1st  in both the Long Jump and Shot Put where she set Association records in each. She also placed 1st in the mini javelin.  Final association records were set by Mylah Wilder, 8UG of Penn Hills Eagles, in the 800m and Grace Howard, 11-12 girls, who placed 1st in the high jump.
